Introduction to Learning Center Course on Risk for Triage Nurses

Telemedicine is now commonplace for doctors’ offices, hospitals, and insurance companies, and many businesses offer nurse triage as a service to their staff. This remote care can benefit patients by making their nurses aware of changes to their health that could be considered red flags, especially when more of them suffer from comorbidities and require daily medications.

What prompts the most healthcare-related lawsuits? Answer: When patients have a delay in care because they weren’t properly advised about the severity of their symptoms.

All medical professionals perform with some degree of risk, and tele-triage nurses are no exception. They must act just as any other prudent nurse would in a similar situation, and should always consider worst-case scenarios, even when their patients’ symptoms initially seem common.

In order to mitigate risk, telephone triage nurses rely on the gold standard of triage protocols developed by Drs. Schmitt and Thompson. These ensure patient assessments are done in a systematic way, reducing the chances that important information will be missed that could otherwise affect their dispositions.

This course will take you through several typical patient encounters, and test whether you can identify potential red flags. You’ll learn more about why triage nurses should ask open-ended questions, how to use critical-thinking skills, and explore how triage protocols provide a layer of legal protection.
