New Course in Learning Center : Case Studies in Nurse Triage
TriageLogic has released the first lesson in the latest Learning Center Course : Case Studies in Nurse Triage. Now that you know the 10 Critical Steps of a Triage Call, from Course 2, we will apply them to case studies in Course 3. This course will go over different call scenarios and identify the ten critical steps a triage nurse must take in each call.
Each step in the process has a purpose, and it is important not to skip over any of them. Doing so may result in your patient not getting the appropriate care advice for their symptom. This delay in care can result in a bad outcome for your patient! With practice, you will discover which steps are brief and take only a minute, and which steps may take you longer to complete.
Lesson 1 : Case of a Crying Baby
In this lesson, we detail a case study for a call during the evening shift from a concerned mother for her 6-week-old baby. Her child has been inconsolable for most of the day and the mother needs to know what to do. Using the ten steps that you learned about in Course 2, we illustrate how a triage nurse will handle the case of the mother and her child to determine the best path to care.
10 Critical Steps of a Nurse Triage Call
- Introduce yourself.
- Collect demographic information.
- Collect a brief PMH.
- Let your patient talk.
- Document a brief, yet complete, assessment.
- Choose the right protocol.
- Get your patient to the right level of care.
- Give relevant care advice.
- Make sure your patient knows when to call back.
- Offer reassurance and be sure your patient is able and willing to follow the plan you discussed.
Once this lesson is completed, you should have a better understanding of how all the steps work together. This training will allow you to better gather the information you need as a healthcare professional to make a decision about the care your patient needs at that time.
