Learning Center Lesson: Nurse Triage
What is Nurse Triage?
This short video will give you a preview of our lesson about nurse triage. The first part of the lesson will introduce you to the history of triage. In particular, it will teach you about the definition of the term “triage,” how it originated, how triage is meant to be used, and how it has evolved during its history to become a tool that is used extensively in both dangerous situations and more traditional settings, such as doctors’ offices.
The next part of this introductory lesson will focus on the current use of triage in the medical field and the specifics of nurse triage. Additionally, this part of the lesson will touch upon the nursing process (assessment, planning and intervention, diagnosis, and evaluation). Reviewing the nursing process is an important reminder of just how critical these steps are to successfully treating a patient.
The final part of the lesson will begin with a review of the skills that a triage nurse needs to treat patients properly. Specifically, you will learn about assessment skills, critical thinking skills, and communication skills. You will also be given information about the inner workings of being a triage nurse and situations you may encounter on a daily basis. For example, you might have to deal with very different patients within minutes of each other, or you might have to work a long shift that involves many hours of sitting.
Finally, after completing this lesson, make sure you check out our other courses on telephone nurse triage:
