Learning Center Case Study on Juan, an Adult with Diabetes
The next triage case study is available on Triage Logic’s Learning Center. Throughout Course 3, you will be applying the 10 Critical Steps of a Triage Call, that you learned in Course 2, to call scenarios. In Lesson 1, you were able to apply those 10 Critical Triage Steps to help find the correct level of care for baby Laura. In Lesson 2, you will apply those steps to a new case study. This lesson will introduce you to Maria and Juan, her 80-year old father, who is not quite himself today. He is a diabetic, but has not been to his physician for some time. Maria has called this Saturday afternoon because her father is groggy and not responding to her normally.
10 Critical Steps of a Triage Call
- Introduce yourself
- Collecting demographic information
- Collecting a brief PMH
- Letting the patient talk
- Documenting a brief yet complete assessment
- Choosing the right protocol
- Getting your patient to the right level of care
- Give relevant care advice
- Make sure your patient knows when to callback
- Offer reassurance and be sure your patient is able/willing to follow the plan discussed.
You will learn the importance of Steps 3 and 10. Knowing the full picture of the patient’s medical history will help you, as a telephone triage nurse, to choose the correct protocol for Juan’s symptoms and determine the correct path to care. And once that path has been determined, it is equally important that the plan is followed, to ensure the best care for the patient.
Once this lesson is completed, you should have a better understanding of how all the steps work together. This training will allow you to better gather the information you need as a healthcare professional to make a decision about the care your patient needs at that time.
